Macquarie
Island
Macquarie Island, nicknamed ‘Macca’, is an Australian Subantarctic Island. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its geological importance: rocks from the earth’s mantle are here exposed above sea level.
Macquarie’s windswept shoreline is inhabited by seals (mainly elephant seals) and several species of penguins, including the endemic royal penguin. The steep escarpments lead to an undulating plateau (250 m to 300 m above sea level) where feldmark is the most widespread vegetation formation.
